Business goals

DJO Global uses Boomi AtomSphere integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) to help healthcare providers increase revenue while focusing on patient outcomes

As a global provider of durable medical equipment (DME) solutions for musculoskeletal health, vascular health and pain management, DJO Global manufactures and sells a broad range of medical devices including knee and hip replacements and conservative care products. The company’s overall mission is to deliver state-of-the-art medical devices and services that enable people to live life to the fullest while maximizing end users’ comfort.

To that end, DJO Global developed the MotionMD software solution that automates DME claims management, inventory dispensing and physician protocols, which in turn helps optimize productivity and improve patient outcomes with point-of-care technology. The company’s technologies also help providers improve billing accuracy and ensure timely collection of reimbursements.

For both physician practices and hospitals, integrating patient data across systems has historically been a challenge, requiring complex processes, significant manual labor, painstaking repetitive data entry and piles of error-prone paperwork.

With the widespread adoption of billing and revenue management software modules, electronic medical records (EMRs) and practice management systems, healthcare organizations have seen the need for data integration solutions to deliver the right information at the right time, while adhering to HIPAA security regulations.

DJO Global discovered that Boomi AtomSphere integration platform as a service (iPaaS) offers cloud-based integration technology that works in a variety of real-world healthcare scenarios. This integration platform allows DJO Global to facilitate healthcare interoperability so that practices can rein in healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes, while providing a more efficient and patient-centric clinical experience.

“We needed a product that was capable of securely moving data across all formats while being cost-effective for our customers,” says Mike Peters, chief information officer at DJO Global. “The Boomi solution was that product.”

How Boomi Helped

Data-sharing challenges for healthcare providers

In a rapidly changing healthcare environment, physician practices and hospitals are continuously challenged to focus on delivering care that results in more positive patient outcomes. At the same time, they must find ways to address rising healthcare costs and decreasing reimbursements. Increasing efficiency, while remaining compliant, is critical.

DJO Global knew that integrating data between its MotionMD orthopedic software solution and patient EMRs had the potential to solve several key challenges faced by today’s healthcare providers. The solution helps increase operational efficiency by providing interoperability between systems, balance the cost of care with positive patient outcomes, and improve patient satisfaction as well as the healthcare provider’s bottom line — all by streamlining data entry and improving data quality and compliance.

With healthcare practices using hundreds of different EMRs and other software solutions, DJO Global needed MotionMD to be able to share data with a variety of applications. The solution also had to be seamless for a healthcare provider to share the information that the practice needed to run at optimal efficiency and reduce errors that cause claims to be rejected by insurers.

Integrating data to streamline healthcare delivery

To solve the data sharing problem for its customers, DJO Global implemented Boomi AtomSphere integration platform as a service. AtomSphere powers DJO Integrator — a DJO Global interface that shares patient demographic data from client EMR systems with MotionMD, which, in turn, is updated as soon as the DME and treatment plan is prescribed for a patient.

When data is integrated using DJO Integrator, MotionMD gives healthcare providers a complete view of the patient record from the EMR. This simplifies diagnosis-driven protocols, dispensing and billing so that the physician can prescribe the most appropriate treatment. Regardless of the data format the systems use — whether patient data is published using HL7 publication standards, flat files, database pulls or APIs — DJO Integrator, powered by Boomi, ensures that it all works together.

The small footprint of the Boomi Atom — a runtime engine that signals when data is ready for retrieval by different applications — was instrumental in the decision to select Boomi. It is easy to install and manage, and DJO Global customers like the ability to control access to patient data when it is needed to ensure that data remains secure.
Saving time, improving data quality

With MotionMD and DJO Integrator, data sharing is simplified and paperwork is eliminated. Healthcare practices can standardize their DME protocols. Since DME dispensing data is automatically updated in MotionMD each time a product is pulled for a patient, it also simplifies inventory control for the practice, allowing for more accurate order replenishment and automated warehouse restocking.

Sharing data allows clinics to streamline their office processes significantly, eliminating redundancy while reducing errors, and lowering costs by improving efficiency. The benefits to the practice are significant, and reducing the amount of time needed for data entry enhances the patient’s experience at the clinic.

Data quality improvements can have a significant financial impact, as well. “Integrating patient data from the EMR into MotionMD helped DJO realize a material improvement in both speed of transactions as well as improved financial results at clinics,” Peters says. “Clinics using DJO Integrator continue to show improved first-pass collections and reduced billing lead times versus clinics not integrated with their EMR systems.”

First-pass collections (billing transactions paid on the “first pass” to the insurance company without being rejected for any reason) have improved significantly now that patient data is consistent and billing codes are accurately applied.

“The Boomi product is a great fit for our needs,” says Donald Singelyn, Customer Automation Solutions, DJO Global. “The small footprint of the Atom, along with powerful transformation capabilities, all in a HIPAA-compliant manner, is critical for this environment. Boomi continues to be an outstanding partner in making MotionMD and DJO Integrator a success.”
