Alstom
Global leader in sustainable mobility solutions enhanced operational efficiency, customer service, and AI readiness with the Boomi Enterprise Platform
Business goals
Alstom, a global leader in rail transport system manufacturing, specializes in three core product lines: rolling stock and components (train production), digital and integrated systems (signaling, infrastructure, and turnkey solutions), and maintenance services for trains, signaling, and infrastructure.
Alstom specializes in customized systems, which require a robust data infrastructure to support the speed, accuracy, and monitoring of data exchanges across the company, its clients, and its suppliers. But the company lacked a centralized integration platform, and as a result, was experiencing some significant challenges across its ecosystem.
The company wanted to replace its disparate integrations with a strong, integrated data backbone. This new solution would need to facilitate enterprise-level data monitoring and governance and accelerate design-to-cost analytics while also supporting essential functions such as the exchange of predictive and corrective maintenance data.
Integration Challenges
Alstom’s reliance on thousands of internal and external on-premises, cloud, and SaaS applications created a fragmented integration landscape. Point-to-point integrations across numerous on-premises and cloud-based internal and external applications limited data visibility and agility. This caused data processes to be slow and error-prone, delaying decision-making and customer responsiveness.
One of the key challenges was efficiency. The company’s design-to-cost application took five days to load essential data, hampering user productivity. This was largely due to Alstom’s IT infrastructure, which:
- Included a “spaghetti bowl” of point‑to‑point integrations across numerous applications
- Limited monitoring and control over data flows, resulting in slower change cycles and inconsistent accuracy
- Was unable to support AI and analytics use cases
How Boomi Helped
Alstom needed a reliable and scalable integration platform to consolidate its data and optimize information exchange with customers. The Boomi Enterprise Platform was selected due to its user-friendliness and comprehensive features. Now, Boomi is Alstrom’s primary integration layer for both internal operations and client-facing data exchanges. Boomi Insights plays a crucial role in monitoring and observing these processes, improving reliability and platform stability.
With Boomi, Alstom moves data faster and accurately, supporting key use cases:
- Maintenance: Automating operational data delivery to clients for proactive service.
- Design‑to‑Cost: End‑to‑end data load acceleration for timely analysis and decision‑making.
- Data Monitoring/Governance: Centralized, governed data flows aligned to an integrated data backbone.
Results
The Boomi Enterprise Platform powered significant improvements in operational efficiency and customer service for Alstrom, including:
- Reduced data load time from five days to under 24 hours for its design-to-cost application
- Enhanced customer relationships with high-speed data processing and accuracy for enterprise and client data exchange
- Gained observability capabilities, enabling better predictive and corrective maintenance data exchange with clients
In future, Alstom plans to introduce human interaction within its data exchange processes through Boomi Flow, advance API management using the Boomi Control Plane, and enable AI‑driven efficiency across its rail business.
