Over the past year, demand for real time health information — from availability of vaccines to local COVID-19 stats — has been at an all-time high. But the need to provide this information has been met with the challenges of seamlessly consolidating accurate data pulled from various databases and departments within the state government, as well as external sources like hospitals, labs, and more.
With over 10 million residents across the state, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) serves a large and diverse group of constituents. Effectively communicating information about the virus was essential in the state’s fight against COVID-19. NC DHHS realized that innovative technology — and a modern integration platform — would be required to meet this challenge.
The NC DHHS Business Intelligence Data Platform (BIDP), with the Boomi AtomSphere Platform as its heart, powers the state’s COVID–19 response, making data readily available and visible for state agencies, media, and the general public. The department also delivers this information to healthcare providers managing and administering the COVID-19 vaccine through its COVID-19 Vaccine Management System (CVMS).
NC DHHS’ vaccine system has not only made a major impact on its constituents, but also recently garnered the StateScoop 50 State IT Innovation of the Year Award win for the department. In addition, NC DHHS’ Deputy Chief Technology Officer Corey Mercy received the StateScoop 50 award for State Leadership of the Year.
NC DHHS developed its HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based BIDP to provide analysts and Tableau developers a unified view for data analysis, reporting, and creation of COVID-19 dashboards for DHHS internal programs, other North Carolina agencies, and the public.
The NC DHHS BIDP needs to integrate data from multiple internal and external sources. These sources include COVID-19 vaccine provider enrollment, along with information from the North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR), CDC Vaccine Administration Management System (VAMS), CDC Immunization Gateway (IZ) Data Clearinghouse, North Carolina Medical Board, North Carolina Board of Nursing, North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, and more.
Each data source provides a specific input necessary to deliver the information North Carolina residents and healthcare providers need. For example, the CDC IZ Gateway is used to connect to vaccine data for state data reporting purposes. The data is used for analysis, performance monitoring, reporting, and visualization through Tableau dashboards of who is receiving the vaccine, vaccination availability phases, and demographics.
The NC DHHS BIDP uses the Boomi AtomSphere Platform to seamless consolidate and connect data from these disparate systems and resources.
Boomi’s integration platform as a service (iPaaS) delivers a cloud service for application, data, and process and service-oriented architecture (SOA) integration, and supports a range of scenarios, including cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-on-premises and on-premises-to-on-premises. The Boomi AtomSphere Platform gives the NC DHHS BIDP the ability to also manage a variety of different data formats, including databases and flat files.
Government agencies and departments like NC DHHS need to be able to translate important data sets and information to a wide range of audiences through accessible and accurate applications. From communicating with constituents and powering chatbots, to streamlining government employee onboarding and bringing together data in platforms like NC DHHS BIDP, the Boomi AtomSphere Platform powers transformation for tomorrow’s cities and states.
