How Boomi Puts the Referee in AI

While the excitement over AI is understandable and its potential is undeniably amazing, a time-worn adage still applies to this new, agentic future:

When your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Enterprises are eager to wildly swing the AI hammer at everything, leading to a school of thought that we’re heading for a “SaaS-apocalypse.” It’s a trendy theory that AI will render existing software as a service platforms obsolete.

Boomi CEO Steve Lucas and I have discussed this at length, and we agree that it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of how to deploy AI to achieve meaningful outcomes. Steve makes the point that “logic gates” – our long-standing systems of record, such as ERPs and CRMs – are essential corporate guardrails. AI may be a fantastic hammer, but you still need the rest of the toolbox to engineer an enterprise foundation.

I want to follow up on Steve’s thoughtful post by taking a moment to explain how the Boomi Enterprise Platform orchestrates those other tools and the pivotal governance role we play as agentic systems become more prevalent within our businesses.

Rules for holding AI accountable cannot be embedded in those agentic systems for a simple reason. AI is probabilistic, meaning that it makes judgments based on nuanced patterns and likelihoods rather than rigid, binary rules. It’s not in AI’s nature to always follow strict protocols. Instead, AI needs the deterministic structure of logic gates to keep it in check, meaning governance must reside outside of AI.

When you have a solid, responsible blend of probabilistic and deterministic processes coming together to solve real-world enterprise challenges, AI reliability skyrockets. That’s when AI truly becomes a game-changer for the business.

Here’s where Boomi comes in. The Boomi platform orchestrates the interactions between AI and these logic gates.

How Boomi Applies Guardrails

This isn’t a new mission for us. Long before AI turned everything upside down, Boomi had been instilling a layer of logic throughout business ecosystems. On one hand, the Boomi platform is the modern middle layer. It’s an independent, agnostic solution that connects anything to everything. At a deeper level, Boomi works with the entire universe of application vendors, acting as an extension of them to enforce consistent logic throughout the entire enterprise tech stack.

As the integrator of systems of record, Boomi stitches together business logic across all applications. The platform applies logic to fill any gaps and adds connectivity so processes can span the entire business, ensuring everything works together cohesively.

Boomi has always done that.

Steve has a nice way of describing this. He says Boomi is like the smooth pavement that allows business processes to flow frictionlessly.

Now comes AI.

There are AI evangelists who argue that guardrails should operate within agentic systems. They believe AI has universal functionality – including the ability to self-manage. But there are flaws to that thinking. Generic AI models lack the context of how a specific business operates. They don’t understand the enterprise’s “rulebook.” Also, remember that AI, by its nature, is probabilistic rather than deterministic. Like humans to some degree, AI is making decisions on the fly. Let’s say there’s a process that requires five distinct steps. Maybe an agent decides it has a better idea and can optimize the process by skipping two of those steps. (Just as a human might.) If it turns out those steps are critical to your business, this action could cause enormous downstream issues that might go undiscovered if the agent is ungoverned.

You’re not holding AI accountable to the established rules when you allow it to govern itself. That creates a trust problem.

But not if you have Boomi.

Our platform enforces logic gates with guardrails. A business can connect agents to its rules defined within its applications via APIs. We can expose those APIs to MCP (Model Context Protocol) or other governance mechanisms by giving agents access to the application data layer while still controlling which functions they can use. Boomi orchestrates this through a unified platform that consolidates the full complement of tools needed to create a reliable AI strategy. Integration and automation. API management. Data management. AI agent management. With our Agentstudio capabilities, our customers are converting integration processes into tools that compel agents to follow the rules that, for very good reasons, businesses have implemented over the years.

Customers are claiming victory because we bring their deterministic systems to the party and precisely control what agents can and cannot do. When business leaders complain they can’t trust AI because the reliability of its output is 80% or even less, that’s because there are no execution rules in place. We significantly increase that reliability by ensuring that AI adheres to defined rules outside the agentic environment.

This approach means AI can’t just do whatever it thinks is best. Instead, it operates within the safe, contained environment defined by your established business protocols.

That’s how you build trust in AI.

The Future of AI in the Enterprise

AI is changing business. However, change does not mean replace. Those anchor systems and best-of-breed applications you depend on today will likely be here tomorrow. Yes, they may be different. They might be “headless” in that you access them through an agentic experience. Yet while they might be behind the scenes, they’ll still be there, serving as the logic gates that keep AI on the straight and narrow.

I envision our future business operations as a tri-layered structure:

  • Data Foundation. Timely, accessible, and trusted data that contains context.
  • Logic Gates. The verified layer where systems act as the referees for AI.
  • Agentic Experience. How we interact with our operations and drive outcomes.

Boomi orchestrates all three levels. We ensure your business goals dictate how you deploy AI. Boomi does this today. We also have some incredibly exciting announcements to share at our upcoming Boomi World conference about how we’re advancing this agentic vision. Also, our future roadmap is focused on even further innovation to help businesses make the most consequential decision they face today: how to govern every agent.

You need more than one tool to build something special in our agentic world. Boomi gives you access to all of them.

Attend Boomi World 2026, May 11-14 in Chicago, to learn how to accelerate your business success and see how Boomi is applying responsible, well-governed AI strategies to create real-world innovation.
