“The time savings, increased efficiency, and improved documentation quality all make Boomi Scribe an essential tool in Crane’s integration workflow” — Tapash Bishoi, Senior Manager/Architect, Crane Worldwide Logistics

Leading global supply chain solutions provider Crane Worldwide Logistics manages complex supply chains to ensure the smooth flow of goods across the globe. With more than 130 locations across 30 countries, the company relies on best-of-breed technologies to provide cost efficiency and visibility across the full shipment lifecycle. Boomi AI Agents are the most recent addition to the list of Boomi Enterprise Platform capabilities that Crane is using to this end.

Crane’s operations involve a vast network of partners, numerous EDI transactions, and a constant stream of sensitive, business-critical data. In 2020, Crane undertook a modernization initiative, implementing the Boomi Enterprise Platform for its broad integration, EDI, API management, master data, and workflow automation capabilities. Today, more than 100 trading partners connect with Crane via Boomi B2B/EDI Management.

Over the past few years, Boomi’s integration and automation have provided measurable time- and cost-savings for Crane, along with significant reductions in labor and transportation vehicles needed for shipping. However, a persistent problem remained despite the complex coordination of logistics: documentation. Now, Crane is taking advantage of Boomi Scribe to drastically reduce the time needed for developers to create process documentation.

The Need for Process Documentation

Tapash Bishoi, who leads much of Crane’s technical innovation, explained the need for better documentation processes. EDI integrations are notoriously tricky to build, requiring a lot of customization. Bishoi’s team was constantly building integrations, with little time for tracking, which easily led to a lack of visibility.  “Even I would forget what we built, where we built it, and why,” he says.

This sentiment resonated throughout Bishoi’s team. Manually documenting integration processes, especially the intricate, custom EDI setups, was a time-consuming and often inconsistent task. Developers spent hours crafting documents, and even then, the details of each process weren’t always captured accurately. This created bottlenecks, slowed down onboarding, and made troubleshooting a more arduous process.

The need for a better solution became increasingly apparent. Crane needed a way to streamline documentation, ensure consistency, and free up developers to focus on building and optimizing integrations. That’s where Boomi Scribe came into play.

Boomi Scribe transforms integration documentation by autonomously generating detailed summaries of integration processes. Powered by Amazon Bedrock, AWS Lambda, and Amazon DynamoDB, it captures process metadata, business context, functions, and schedules with no manual effort from developers. By eliminating tedious documentation work, Scribe allows developers to focus on scaling outcomes instead of managing busywork. It also supports version control and side-by-side comparisons of integration versions. Since it is built directly into Boomi’s Process Canvas, the intuitive drag-and-drop interface for building and managing integrations, developers can stay in their workflow without switching platforms.

Achieving Consistency, Accuracy, and Time Savings Through Agentic Automation

Crane adopted Boomi Scribe, an AI agent included in the Boomi Enterprise Platform, to automate the documentation of its integration processes. While Scribe isn’t able to address every nuance of the company’s custom EDI setups, it proved to be a powerful tool for Bishoi’s team. Scribe generates a significant portion of the documentation, often up to 60-70%, providing a solid foundation for developers to build upon.

“Scribe is a great help for my developers to document what they are building,” Bishoi says. Developers can download the generated documents as Microsoft Word files, then edit and format them to meet Crane’s specific requirements. This hybrid approach allows Crane to leverage Scribe’s automation while still maintaining control over the final document’s content and presentation.

The impact of Boomi Scribe was immediate and significant. The documentation process time, which previously took days of effort, was reduced to just a few hours. This frees up valuable time for developers, allowing them to focus on more strategic tasks and accelerate project timelines.

“If I build 10 processes, and my developers build 10 processes, we previously would need close to 5 days to prepare documentation,” Bishoi explained. “Why spend multiple days on documentation when Boomi Scribe can help us deliver it in as few as four-to-five hours?”

Moreover, Scribe has improved the consistency and accuracy of Crane’s documentation. Reviewers can now focus on the filling in the critical, customized pieces, knowing that the basic structure and details were already captured by Scribe. This makes the review process more efficient and ensures all necessary information is included in the final documents.

Crane’s experience with Boomi Scribe demonstrates the power of agentic automation in streamlining documentation processes. By leveraging Scribe, Crane has not only saved time and resources but has also improved the consistency and accuracy of its documentation, ultimately enabling the company to move faster and more efficiently in the dynamic world of logistics.
