Boomi Creates Higher Education Package for University Computer Science Courses

Working with Cornell University, Boomi has created an educational package that introduces university students to the concept of a modern integration platform as a service (iPaaS) and how to use the Boomi Platform for integration, data governance and more.

Designed to be easily incorporated into university computer science courses, the Boomi Higher Education iPaaS Package includes:

  • Three hours of educational content through online video instruction and activities
  • Exercises and evaluations to assess student progress
  • A hands-on project, giving students the opportunity to build an integration process from scratch using a low-code environment
  • An instructor’s guide, providing background material and a detailed overview of the package

Boomi provides everything instructors need for introducing students to iPaaS, including access to Boomi Integration. No programming skills are required to take the training courses — students will have the opportunity to learn everything they need to know within the class.

Cornell and Boomi: A Strong and Productive Partnership

Since 2013, Cornell University has been using the Boomi unified platform to build high-performance integrations for HR and financial services applications as part of building a connected campus.

As one of the top ten schools for computer science, Cornell is on the leading edge of technical education. And after experiencing the power of Boomi first-hand, the university believed that the modern iPaaS was a classroom-worthy technology.

In the spring of 2018, the Boomi Education Services team began working with the Cornell computer science and information science departments to build educational content for Cornell students. By late summer, the Boomi Higher Education iPaaS Package was born.

And in the fall of 2018, 45 students attending instructor Jeff Christen’s “Information Science 4555: Business Intelligence Systems” course learned about cloud-native integration, the Boomi Platform, and methodologies focused on low-code development.

“Boomi provided everything I needed to teach students about modern integration,” says Christen. “The content was great and students could log into the platform and begin using it right away.”

James Parker, a Cornell computer science major who learned Boomi while assisting with Christen’s class, agrees.

“I was able to quickly learn how to develop integrations using the Boomi Platform,” Parker says. “Through hands-on exercises, I was able to broaden and deepen my understanding of how to make the most of the platform.”

Parker, who switched his major to Computer Science after taking the class, has continued to use the Boomi Platform as a summer intern for Cornell data integration and data governance projects. He’s helping with a series of IT initiatives involving the university’s financial services systems, during which he also achieved both the Boomi Developer and Architect certifications.

Continue Learning With Boomi’s Online Training

Students who participate in the Boomi Higher Education iPaaS Package curriculum (at any school where it is taught) can continue to explore Boomi’s free online training, advancing their knowledge and hands-on experience in critical IT areas such as data integration, data governance, API lifecycle management and workflow automation.

Once students complete these additional trainings, they can take certification exams, also at no charge. The resulting certifications will enhance the students’ resumes as they enter the workforce.

“Our goal is to give universities a complete, end-to-end package that can easily be incorporated into computer science curricula,” says Eric Crist, practice manager of global education services at Boomi. “It is focused on introducing students to modern integration technologies and practices, so they can get a sense of where the industry is going. Best of all, it provides hands-on experience with state-of-the-art applications.”
