- Organizations are abandoning MuleSoft due to high costs, inflexibility, and lack of comprehensive data lifecycle management — many prefer a complete restart to migration.
- Atturra’s migration approach eliminates financial risk through commitment-based models (risk-free migrations with guaranteed completion dates, zero-upfront-cost structures amortized over five years).
- Success comes from identifying ‘moments that matter’ — specific business processes where improved data flow creates measurable outcomes for customers and drives real organizational value.
For many organizations, moving away from MuleSoft is no longer just a technology decision. It is a chance to simplify, modernize, and unlock more value from their data. Atturra helped one of Australia’s top three superannuation funds chart a clear path from MuleSoft and Azure to the Boomi Enterprise Platform. The result is a simpler environment, lower migration risk and a faster path to business value.
Atturra is a 1,400-strong, ASX-listed organization headquartered in Sydney, with a team of Boomi experts across ANZ, Asia, and North America. Over a 10-year partnership with Boomi, we have become one of its most accomplished partners globally, earning four recent awards including APJ Partner of the Year and Global Growth Partner of the Year.
A significant and growing part of Atturra’s Boomi work involves one specific challenge: helping organizations move off MuleSoft. Some are migrating. Others have grown so frustrated that they want to leave their existing build behind entirely and start fresh on Boomi. Our strength is not just moving clients from one integration platform as a service (iPaaS) to another. It is helping them simplify what they have, modernize how data moves, and create better outcomes for the business from day one.
In this article, I’ve outlined the frustrations we’ve been hearing from our clients, how Atturra de-risks the migration decision, and what a decade of partnership with Boomi has taught us about getting integration right.
Why Businesses Are Walking Away From MuleSoft
In my experience, it comes down to three things: First, it’s far too expensive and organizations aren’t seeing the value. Second, it’s not flexible enough. The business requires agility but tech teams can’t move fast enough. That’s unlike Boomi, which is very fast. Third, businesses eventually realize it’s too developer-centric and costs too much. Not to mention, MuleSoft doesn’t offer the full data lifecycle that Boomi does.
What has changed recently is not just the volume of migration requests, but their nature. Clients are no longer looking to carry their MuleSoft investment across to a new platform. They want a clean break.
We’ve been doing a steady number of migrations, but now we’re actually seeing fewer of those and more turn-offs. We have MuleSoft customers who want Boomi, but they don’t want to migrate what they’ve got. They’re so disappointed in what they’ve built that they don’t want it anymore. They want to start fresh and modernize from scratch.
How Atturra Approaches Migrations
When a migration is the right path, Atturra’s approach is deliberately different from a standard lift-and-shift. The starting point is an honest assessment of what has actually been built.
Many MuleSoft environments are significantly over-engineered. You’ll find three layers, an API within an API within an API. One university had built the same integration five times when it could have been built once. What they’ve developed over years has become Band-Aid on Band-Aid on Band-Aid.
Moving that complexity to a new platform would simply move the problems. Instead, Atturra works with the business to define a new “to be” state that genuinely improves on the “as is.” Our specialist AI migration tool handles much of the discovery and heavy lifting, but the real value lies in our team’s years of experience. Mule isn’t very well documented. We can discover a lot, but not everything. It’s our expertise that helps clients identify where the most business value actually lies.
Removing the Risk From Migrations
Migration hesitation usually comes down to two fears: being stuck paying for two platforms at once, and waiting too long to see a return on the investment. Atturra has built commercial models specifically to address both. The model works for clients looking to migrate from all major middleware platforms, and not just MuleSoft.
The biggest concern is that they’ll end up with two licenses instead of one. So we offer a risk-free migration. We’re confident we can migrate everything, and we commit to a completion date. If it takes longer, that’s on us. You don’t pay until it’s completed. The structure also tackles one of the most common project failure modes: halfway through, the internal IT team gets pulled onto something else. This way, we’re both committed to getting it done.
For organizations worried about upfront costs, Atturra offers a zero-dollar transformation model. The migration project itself carries no fee. Instead, it is bundled into a managed services contract over five years, with the cost amortized across the life of the agreement. They’re not just getting a migration. They’re getting ongoing managed services on top of it.
Finding the “Moments That Matter”
Once an organization is on Boomi and the integration foundation is solid, the real work begins. At Atturra, we call it finding “moments that matter”: the specific points in a business process where better data flow changes outcomes for real people.
Technology projects should never be just for the sake of doing something. There should be a business outcome, with data at the center of fixing it.
For example, a large utility company came to Atturra wanting to move data from ServiceNow to SAP. We kept asking why, through roughly ten rounds of follow-up questions, before the real answer emerged: when a customer calls to report a broken meter, a technician needs to be dispatched immediately. Two systems need to share data to make that happen. Without it, someone loses power. That’s a moment that matters in the lives of real people.
The same thinking has driven results across industries. We helped an insurance company reduce customer churn by acting faster on rejected transaction data. They built integrations for hospitals so patient forms are pre-filled at check-in. And they helped a university tackle student retention by automating early alerts when students fall behind on assignments.
These aren’t just integration stories. They’re data fixes that lead to outcomes.
Boomi and Atturra: 10 Years of Activating Data, Driving Value
Atturra’s relationship with Boomi stretches back a decade, and the way it started says a lot about how we make decisions. Atturra was close to signing with MuleSoft when a contact called and suggested we take a look at Boomi first.
I walked out of that meeting thinking: this does everything we hadn’t been able to do. It was low-code, easy to learn, and had a predictable licensing model.
The enduring strength of the Boomi / Atturra partnership over the past ten years is built on a core foundation of company culture. Boomi’s culture is very similar to ours at Atturra: the desire to get stuff done fast. Neither of our organizations is political. There are no games. Boomi is very transparent. Great achievers. And the product just works. The fact that I can email Boomi’s CEO Steve Lucas about a partner challenge and he acts on it in five minutes is pretty remarkable.
For Atturra, Boomi is not just a tool. It is the platform that enables us to deliver on our broader promise: helping clients understand and act on the full data lifecycle, from where data is stored and governed, to how it moves, to how it creates value through analytics.
It’s rare for an organization to have visibility into the entire data lifecycle, That’s the gap we exist to fill.
