How We Work Has Changed Forever. Our Worker Journeys Need to Change Too.

I’ve read so many captivating and poignant reactions to the new reality we are in today. No one imagined a global health crisis would upend life as we know it. No one anticipated the sudden shift to remote work. No one predicted that corporations would cease forecasting their performance. No one conceived of events without audiences. We truly are experiencing an historic moment of epic proportions.

Meanwhile, innovation needs to be reignited as we plan our path back to stability and growth. This is particularly true when it comes to how we evaluate and manage our workforces. The largely predictable recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding worker journey needs to evolve to encompass unpredictable changes in health, location, certification, and compliance. Organizations are scrambling to figure out how to handle these changes.

Acceleration of Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation. A well-worn term that’s been part of our lexicon since 2011 when Capgemini first talked about it. But even before the term was coined, there were massive business transformation initiatives taking place around data and digitization. The game was afoot much earlier, starting with the birth of the Internet and the change of our networks from analog to digital.

However, for many organizations, transformation was seen as optional and was broken down into multiple phases, many of which were in the future thanks to complexity and cost. Turns out, CIOs actually have a playbook of what digital initiatives to cut from their budget in lean times.

So, what happens when a major global problem occurs where the best solutions are digital in nature? A rush to reactivate digital transformation initiatives as quickly as possible. By many accounts, the new normal is being addressed head on by a resurgence in digital transformation.

Adaptability is the New Black

HR professionals are at the heart of crafting a strategic response to the new normal. They will need to coordinate myriad macro and micro processes – from managing the ebb and flow of headcount to deeming locations safe for re-entry to tracking where employees eat their lunch. The list is exhaustive.

HR leaders will need to become grand maestros, conducting their universe of workers, colleagues, and technologies as if it were a symphony orchestra playing Beethoven’s Fifth. But what current technology options can support this epic need? Most of the systems in HR and IT ecosystems are not designed for speed and responsiveness.

To introduce adaptability into current workforce management processes requires the addition of capabilities that act as unifiers and accelerants across a diverse and complicated set of systems. Without the ability to adapt, an organization will struggle to thrive in the new normal, and its competitive position will be diminished.

A Workforce Agility Strategy is Essential

As organizations chart a course to what’s next, they’ll need a way to rapidly tune their technologies to changing workforce requirements. Disparate systems, manual processes, and disconnected workflows will need to be brought together and orchestrated to drive operational excellence and great digital experiences. And, this will need to be accomplished without long and expensive development projects.
