Australian Logistics Company Connects Cloud-First Strategy, Data Lake with Dell Boomi

LINX Cargo Care Group using the Boomi platform to ramp up AI, IoT adoption, connect Microsoft Azure-based IT environment, and pool data for analytics

Sydney, Australia April 19, 2018Dell Boomi (Boomi) has announced that Australian logistics company, LINX Cargo Care Group (LINX), is using the Boomi integration platform to connect its cloud-first IT strategy and enable the development of a data lake for granular visibility into its supply chain.

Founded in August 2016 following the divesture of Asciano, LINX comprises the LINX, Autocare, C3 and GeelongPort companies, with more than 3,800 employees across 60 sites in Australia and New Zealand.

Despite its long-standing history in the local logistics sector, LINX was established with a start-up mentality, building its business on a cloud-first IT strategy to enable agile operations that can quickly adapt and scale as the company expands. As part of this approach, it deployed all new systems – including key logistics, safety, and human resources platforms – in Microsoft Azure’s cloud.

“We operate in a large number of high-cost markets and often with very tight margins, so one of the big areas we are interested in capitalising on is how we use technology to find ways to streamline our operations and analyse our data,” said Thomas Gianniodis, Head of IT and Project Management Office, LINX Cargo Care Group.

“A critical component to achieving this is the way we integrate our internal systems, and how we connect these with our customers’ environments to share information with them more easily.”

Using Boomi integration platform-as-a-service (iPaaS), LINX is connecting its core operational systems located in Azure and its data centres with in-field mobile devices and in-vehicle telemetry systems to realise gains in safety, compliance and operational performance out in the field where the work is being done.

Subsequently, the aggregated data has inspired an upcoming data lake project through which LINX will deploy analytics for more informed business decisions. This is expected to be particularly beneficial as the uptake of automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) gains an increasingly-prominent role across the organisation’s four brands.

LINX selected the Boomi platform following a tender process through which it evaluated several traditional and competing cloud-based technologies. The Boomi integration technology stood out for its cloud-native design, which proved a natural fit for the organisation’s Azure-based setup. Boomi also proved most flexible and intuitive, allowing LINX to mould the platform to its specific business requirements.

“Logistics is a fast-paced industry that relies on precision to mitigate disruptions and ensure vendors deliver to the expectations of their customers,” said Michael Evans, Managing Director Asia-Pacific and Japan, Dell Boomi.

“By aligning its cloud-based business environment using the Boomi integration platform, LINX is not only able to create a connected business; it can also leverage the insights generated throughout its operations to identify new areas of growth while improving efficiencies in a competitive market.”
