Application integration is something that every company must eventually come to grips with. Maybe it’s pushing workloads to the cloud that brings integration to the top of the priority list. Sometimes it’s just the need to streamline internal processes and data flows. But one event is sure to create the need for integration — a merger or acquisition.

The 2010 union of Japan-based Renesas Technology and NEC created Renesas Electronics America.

The seedling of Bruguiera cylindrica

Chief information officers need to dramatically change their thinking, according to a recent article in The McKinsey Quarterly.

The article advises that IT organizations need to let go of neat and tidy thinking. Instead, they should build — even cobble together — business services quickly, lest they be outpaced and out-engineered by competitors. Homogeneous architectures should become heterogeneous. Cloud with sun rays

Business executives and chief information officers face more challenges than ever these days. They are dealing with a litany of issues as the pace of business accelerates and an ever-growing array of new competitors circle around them.

Piggy bank on old wood

At a recent banking roundtable hosted in London, participants were presented with two questions:

  • Do you agree that in just three years from now, every new core banking system that goes live will do so in the cloud?

The answer to both questions — from participants ranging from executives at established banks to founders of banking start-ups — was “yes.”

Banking Is Moving to the Cloud

To appreciate how startling this answer is, remember that, at least in the United States, most core banking systems — the systems that run the daily operations of a bank — are legacy on-premise software systems.

As long ago as 2008, 451 Research noted that “the heyday of the enterprise service bus may have come and gone.”

Nine years later, it’s fair to ask whether legacy enterprise service bus (ESB) systems can possibly keep up with the data integration requirements of today’s enterprises.

It’s an important question. Many enterprises are embarking on bold digital transformation initiatives, re-imagining operations and creating new products and services that leverage big data, machine learning, mobile services, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other cutting-edge technologies.
