Business Goals

To Gilead Sciences, a research-based biopharmaceutical company, the impossible is simply that which hasn’t yet been achieved. For more than 30 years, Gilead has worked to deliver medicines for life-threatening diseases.

Over the last 15+ years, Gilead has invested significantly in technology, building out multiple data platforms including enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. But, to deliver data-driven therapeutics, Gilead needed to digitally transform to connect its technology platforms, data, processes, and people.

Integration Challenges

Gilead’s hybrid IT environment was complex, consisting of more than 100 cloud and on-premises applications and platforms deployed across business units.

Its legacy services-oriented architecture (SOA) used to connect backend ERP, CRM, and other critical systems didn’t enable data sharing across systems and people. This inhibited time to market for new products and services, and brought on considerable technical debt.

Gilead IT needed a modern, cloud-based enterprise integration platform to quickly connect on-premises and cloud systems and deliver a single source of truth.

How Boomi Helped

Gilead selected Boomi because of its low-code development environment and connectors to cloud applications, external vendors, and trading partners. To maximize value, Gilead created an integration center of excellence (ICoE) to centralize standards and usage of Boomi Integration, API Management, and B2B/EDI Management.

So far, Gilead has completed 145 integrations including Salesforce, Oracle eBusiness Suite, and Oracle Database. Gilead IT now has one system to manage integrations across business units, enabling the company to deliver its core services and drive innovation.


Gilead IT has reduced integration development time by up to 40 percent, meaning it can produce more integrations and manage fast-changing requirements in a more agile and responsive way.

What used to take six weeks to develop can now be done in less than three weeks, and IT can provide the needed functionality to all its customers – employees, patients, and hospitals.

Additionally, Boomi has enabled Gilead to reduce its technical debt and maintenance windows.
