Open Banking: A New Era for Financial Services

Posted by Erik Mitchell on March 28th, 2018
Open bank vault

The hyper-competitive financial services market is continually evolving. Tweaks made to services today have the power to attract swathes of customers tomorrow.

Now new Open Banking initiatives and regulations are ushering in something of a banking renaissance. Driven by legislation out of Europe, Open Banking aims to force financial institutions to open up their proprietary hold over consumer’s accounts. This means customer spending insights will be available not just to traditional payment services but also telcos, retailers, utilities and more.

When Disaster Strikes…Cloud Integration Supports Resilient Utility and Government Systems

Posted by Nikolai Blackie on February 21st, 2018
Disaster Recovery word cloud over white background

Across the globe extreme weather events and natural disasters routinely bring disruption, chaos and economic hardship to communities and businesses.

For example, in New Zealand where my IT consultancy Adaptiv Integration is headquartered, hard-working teams in the utility and local and central government sectors face constant pressure to respond 24x7x365 to the impact of natural and man-made events. And not always successfully.

Natural catastrophe and extreme weather events have topped the list of perceived risks to New Zealand in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks report for 2018.

Posted by Myles Suer on February 16th, 2018
A businessman with a book sitting on a cloud over Paris, two businessman climbing several ladders to the blue sky under the cloud. Side view. Concept of dream and aspirations.

As cloud technology and business practices evolve, it is important to capture the strategies that are working for chief information officers. To do this, I reached out to the followers of #CIOChat that I host on Twitter. I asked CIOs for their current thinking on public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud. We discussed how organizations can best take advantage of this fundamental technology shift. Hopefully, their insights prove valuable to you.

The State of Cloud Strategy

Most CIOs say they are currently carrying out a mixed cloud strategy and that the cloud-first approach is a relatively new development.

Digital Transformation Requires CIOs to Think in Terms of IT Ecosystems and Agile Integration

The seedling of Bruguiera cylindrica

Chief information officers need to dramatically change their thinking, according to a recent article in The McKinsey Quarterly.

The article advises that IT organizations need to let go of neat and tidy thinking. Instead, they should build — even cobble together — business services quickly, lest they be outpaced and out-engineered by competitors. Homogeneous architectures should become heterogeneous. Instead of implementing business services through internally selected and controlled software hierarchies, enterprises should open their IT infrastructure through APIs while rapidly assembling best-in-class service combining features from both internal and external sources

The point of all this change?

The Cloud Revolution in Banking

Posted by Erik Mitchell on July 19th, 2017
Piggy bank on old wood

At a recent banking roundtable hosted in London, participants were presented with two questions:

  • Do you agree that in just three years from now, every new core banking system that goes live will do so in the cloud?
  • And do you agree that any new bank starting now would be mad to go any other way than the cloud?

The answer to both questions — from participants ranging from executives at established banks to founders of banking start-ups — was “yes.”

Banking Is Moving to the Cloud

To appreciate how startling this answer is, remember that, at least in the United States, most core banking systems — the systems that run the daily operations of a bank — are legacy on-premise software systems.

Shadow IT is rampant and here to stay. The question is: How is your IT team adapting to it?

In most sizable organizations, various business units have deployed cloud applications without IT’s knowledge and control. These shadow IT services range from simple document sharing apps like Dropbox or Google Drive to more sophisticated software for such functions as marketing or customer relationship management (CRM).

Shadow IT is rooted in two factors.
